  • A CSV export option for sorting in Excel

Once you have this written out, you're ready to prompt. The more specific your brief, the better the first-draft output will be — and the less back-and-forth you'll need to do.

JavaScript-rendered content: Axios + Cheerio only reads static HTML. Pages built entirely in React or Vue that require JavaScript to render won't show their content. Tell Claude Code: "Add a note in the output when a page appears to have minimal HTML content — this may indicate JavaScript rendering." For full JS rendering support, you'd need Puppeteer (a headless browser library), which Claude Code can add later if needed.

Rate limiting: Crawling too fast will get your IP temporarily blocked by some servers. Tell Claude Code: "Add a 500ms delay between requests to avoid being rate limited."

Robots.txt compliance: A professional tool should respect robots.txt. Tell Claude Code: "Before crawling any URL, check the site's robots.txt and skip any disallowed paths."

Each of these is a simple follow-up prompt. Claude Code stacks changes onto the existing file without breaking what already works.

Step 4: Build the Analysis Engine (Estimated Time: 60–90 Minutes)

Calibrating Severity Scores

Generic tools treat all issues equally. Your custom tool won't. After the initial build, refine the severity mapping with Claude Code:

"Update the severity levels in analyzer.js: missing title tag = critical, title over 60 characters = warning, missing meta description = warning, noindex on a non-admin page = critical, missing canonical = warning, missing H1 = critical, multiple H1s = warning, missing alt text on images = warning, generic anchor text = info, missing schema = info."

You can adjust these to match your own SEO philosophy. If you work in e-commerce and schema is a deal-breaker for your clients, promote it to critical. If you work with news sites where canonical tags are mission-critical, adjust accordingly. This is the personalization that generic tools can't offer.

Adding Duplicate Detection Across Pages

Single-page analysis is easy. Cross-page analysis — detecting that 12 pages have the same title tag — requires the analyzer to track a running state across all pages it processes. Prompt Claude Code:

"Update the analyzer to track title tags and meta descriptions seen across all pages. After all pages are analyzed, add a post-processing step that flags any duplicates, listing all URLs that share the same title or meta description. Mark duplicate titles as 'critical' and duplicate meta descriptions as 'warning'."

This kind of cross-page logic is something you'd normally need a database for. Claude Code implements it elegantly using in-memory Maps — no database required for a tool auditing under a few hundred pages.

Testing the Analyzer in Isolation

Before wiring everything together, test the analyzer on a known page:

Use inline CSS so the report works without any external dependencies. Color code rows: red background for critical, amber for warning, light blue for info. Save the report as seo-report.html in the project folder."

The "inline CSS" instruction is important. If you use external stylesheets or CDN-hosted CSS frameworks, the report breaks the moment it's viewed offline or sent as an email attachment. Inline styles make it completely portable.

The Health Score Formula

Tell Claude Code how to calculate the score:

"Calculate the health score as follows: start at 100. Deduct 5 points for each critical issue found (up to a maximum deduction of 60 points from critical issues). Deduct 2 points for each warning (up to a maximum of 30 points). Deduct 0.5 points for each info item (up to a maximum of 10 points). The score cannot go below 0. This is your proprietary scoring model. Adjust the deduction weights to match your client's priorities. Some agencies weight technical issues heavier than content issues. Some do the reverse. This is where your tool becomes uniquely yours.

Building the CSV Export

"Add a CSV export function to reporter.js. The CSV should have columns: URL, Issue Type, Severity, Details, Recommended Fix. Save it as seo-report.csv alongside the HTML report."

If below 50, flag that significant technical SEO issues are present that likely have a measurable impact on rankings and should be prioritized immediately. Customize the language to include the actual critical issue count."

Now your tool doesn't just generate data — it generates a narrative. That's the difference between a spreadsheet and a deliverable.

Step 6: Build the Main Entry Point and Test on a Real Site (Estimated Time: 30–45 Minutes)

The final assembly step is creating a single entry-point script that ties the crawler, analyzer, and reporter together into one seamless execution flow. After this step, running your tool is a single command.

Creating the Main Script

"Create a main script called audit.js that does the following in sequence: (1) accepts a URL as a command-line argument (e.g., node audit.js https://example.com); (2) runs the crawler with a default page limit of 50 (allow this to be overridden with a second argument); (3) passes all crawled pages through the analyzer; (4) passes all analysis results through the reporter to generate seo-report.html and seo-report.csv; (5) logs progress to the console at each stage so the user knows what's happening; (6) logs the final health score and a summary of issue counts when complete."

Running Your First Real Audit

Choose a real site — ideally a smaller site you have permission to crawl (your own site, a client's site, or a well-known public domain). Run:

Watch the console output. You'll see URLs being discovered, pages being analyzed, and finally a confirmation that the reports have been saved. Open seo-report.html in your browser. This is the moment where months of using other people's tools gives way to using your own.

What to Do When Things Break

On a real site, things will break. Common issues:

SSL certificate errors: Some sites have expired or misconfigured SSL. Tell Claude Code: "Add error handling for SSL errors — catch CERT errors and log the URL as inaccessible rather than crashing."

Timeout errors: Slow pages will cause the crawler to hang. Tell Claude Code: "Set a 10-second timeout on all HTTP requests. If a page doesn't respond in time, log it as a timeout error and move on."

Encoding issues: Pages with unusual character encoding can corrupt the HTML. Tell Claude Code: "Handle encoding errors gracefully — if a page can't be parsed, log it as a parse error and continue with the next URL."

Each of these is a one-prompt fix. Real-world resilience is built iteratively, not upfront.

Step 7: Add Advanced Features That Generic Tools Don't Have (Estimated Time: 60–90 Minutes)

Now that the core tool works, you can add capabilities that would cost hundreds of dollars per month on enterprise platforms — because you're building it yourself, it costs nothing beyond the API tokens you use to generate the code.

Keyword Density Analysis

"Add a keyword analysis function to the analyzer. Accept an optional target keyword as a command-line argument. For each page, calculate: (1) how many times the keyword appears in the visible body text; (2) whether it appears in the title tag; (3) whether it appears in the H1; (4) whether it appears in the meta description; (5) the keyword density as a percentage of total word count. Flag if the keyword appears 0 times (info), or if density is above 4% (warning — possible over-optimization)."

Page Speed Flags

Without running a full Lighthouse test, you can still flag obvious performance issues from the HTML:

"Add performance flags to the analyzer: (1) count the total number of external scripts loaded on the page — flag as warning if more than 10; (2) check for render-blocking resources in the head (script tags without async or defer attributes) — flag as warning for each found; (3) check for inline CSS in the body (style attributes on elements) — flag as info if more than 20 instances found; (4) check if images have explicit width and height attributes — flag missing dimensions as info (cumulative layout shift risk)."

Content Quality Signals

"Add content analysis to the analyzer: (1) calculate the total word count of visible body text — flag pages under 300 words as warning ('thin content'); (2) check for the presence of any external outbound links — flag pages with zero outbound links as info; (3) detect if the page content appears to be primarily navigational (under 100 words) and exclude it from the thin content flag."
"Add an internal linking analysis module. After all pages are crawled, analyze the internal link graph: (1) identify which pages have zero internal links pointing to them (orphan pages) — flag these as critical; (2) identify which pages are linked to most frequently (hub pages); (3) calculate the average number of internal links per page; (4) flag pages with fewer than 3 internal links pointing to them as warnings. Include this data in the report."

Orphan page detection is a feature that Screaming Frog includes only in its paid version. You've now built it yourself in under 5 minutes of prompting.

Scheduled Reporting (Optional)

If you want the tool to run automatically on a schedule — say, every Monday morning for a client retainer — Claude Code can set that up too:
